A Mixed Bed Plant is a type of water treatment system that uses a combination of cation and anion exchange resins in a single bed to produce high-purity water by removing dissolved impurities. Mixed bed plants are commonly used for applications that require extremely pure water, such as in Boiler feed water, Pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics production and other industries that need water with low levels of total dissolved solids (TDS).

How to work:

• Water Flow: the water passes through a vessel containing a mixture of cation and anion exchange resins.
• Ion Exchange: The cation resin exchanges positively charged ions (like calcium and magnesium) The anion resin exchanges negatively charged ions (like chloride and sulfate)
• Polishing:This Process removes nearly all dissolved salts, producing highly purified water.
• Regeneration: The resins need to be regenerated periodically using strong acid (for cation resins) and strong alkali (for anion resins) to restore their ion-exchanging capacity.

Mixed Bed Plants are mainly used to produce very high-quality water such as for power plants, laboratories or electronics manufacturing.

Regeneration of Mixed Bed Plants:

Regeneration is a necessary process to restore the exchange capacity of the resins. The two types of resins (cation and anion) require different regenerants:

1. Cation Resins:

• These resins are regenerated using a strong acid (usually hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid) that replaces ions (like calcium, magnesium or sodium) with hydrogen ions (H⁺).

2. Anion Resins:

• Anion resins are regenerated with an alkaline solution, typically caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), to replace the anions (like chloride, sulfate or nitrate) with hydroxide ions(OH^-).

3. Rinsing: After regeneration, both resins are thoroughly rinsed with water to remove excess acid or alkali before the system is put back into operation.

After Regeneration, the resins are flushed with water to remove any excess regenerants before being returned to service.
